| show-medals = yes | updated = }} Melissa Jane Corfe (born January 20, 1986 in Durban) is a South African swimmer, who specialized in freestyle and backstroke events. She is a multiple-time South African champion and record holder for her respective events. Corfe had won a total of five medals, including three golds for the women's freestyle (100, 200, and 400 m), at the 2007 All-Africa Games in Algiers, Algeria. She also set two national records (both long and short course), as a member of the South African swimming team, in the freestyle and medley relays, at the 2008 FINA World Short Course Championships in Manchester, England. ==2008 Summer Olympics== Corfe qualified for five swimming events at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, by breaking new South African records and clearing FINA A-standard entry times of 1:59.76 (200 m freestyle), 4:08.70 (400 m freestyle), and 2:10.03 (200 m backstroke) from the national championships in Johannesburg. On the first night of the Games, Corfe teamed up with Wendy Trott, Mandy Loots, and Kathryn Meaklim in the 4×100 m freestyle relay. Swimming the lead-off leg, Corfe recorded a fastest split of 55.93 seconds, but the South Africans settled for 16th place in 3:51.14. In the 400 m freestyle, Corfe challenged seven other swimmers on the sixth and final heat, including top medal favorites Federica Pellegrini of Italy and Rebecca Adlington of Great Britain. She raced to sixth place and 17th overall by less than 0.05 of a second behind Switzerland's Flavia Rigamonti, outside her entry time of 4:10.54. On the third night of the preliminaries, Corfe failed to break a two-minute barrier in the 200 m freestyle. She lost in a close race against fourth-place finalist Paulina Barzycka of Poland by three hundredths of a second (0.03), dropping to sixth place and thirty-third overall in 2:00.95. In her third and final individual event, 200 m backstroke, Corfe cruised to seventh place on the fourth heat by nearly a second behind China's Chen Yanyan in 2:12.64. Corfe failed to advance into the semifinals as she placed 22nd overall in the preliminary heats, sharing her position with Ukraine's Kateryna Zubkova. On the last day of the preliminaries, Corfe reunited her South African teammates Loots, Suzaan van Biljon, and Lize-Mari Retief in the 4×100 m medley relay.
